5 tips to buy baby furniture
With so many options available to decorate and furnish your baby bedroom this takes can get a bit daunting. Before you jump in your car and drive to every single baby furniture shop or spend hours in front of your computer searching for your baby furniture online it is best to step back and write down some basics that will save you time and money. Below are some tips that will help you ensure you are making the right decision when it comes to finding the best furniture for your baby.
1. Budget and value for money:
If you are financially conscious your best bet is to set a maximum budget as you will certainly be tempted to buy everything and let the credit card run wild. As an example, prices for baby cot could range from $200 to $2,500 depending of the features, brand and quality.
Whilst it is true that you can find low cost baby furniture there are also other factors to consider such as the time you will be able to use it. Sometimes this could even outweigh the cost of the furniture.
As an example you could buy a baby bath and changer for $150 however this item will only be useful for a few months after your baby girl is born plus you will need some space to store it when not in use.
A good option to this type of products is a baby changer with bath AND storage that you can use even as your baby grows. The image on the right shows an example of this practical type of baby furniture. The price for these type of baby changers with bath start from $549 but when you think about it you can use it up until your baby has grown as the bath and changer table can be removed to be used as a beautiful chest of drawers.
Make sure you measure your baby’s bedroom beforehand to ensure the furniture you buy will actually fit and allow for some generous space for your little one to play and run as she/he grows.
You can also reduce the cost and improve the space usage at the same time: If you already have storage space built into the bedroom you might not need a wardrobe, instead you could just get a small chest of drawers in case the storage you have is limited or want some space to store stuff other than clothes.
Also if you are ordering your baby furniture online and the accessibility to your place is tricky make sure the item will be delivered flat packed or that at least it will be easy to get to your baby bedroom.
Finally, have you considered what would you do when you no longer use the furniture? Will you sell it, give it away or store it for your next child? For any of these options you will need to store it somewhere so make sure your new baby furniture can be stored easily.
3. Style and design
This is the fun part and where you can let your imagination run free!
Determine the style of furniture based on your taste, the decoration you want for your baby room and even the colours you like to make sure they look great with your new furniture:
a. If your style is conservative you can use natural wood colours for the furniture and soft warm colours for the bedroom. You can match this with a decoration using details like vintage picture frames.
b. If you are more of a funky mum then look for furniture that incorporates colours and textures which you can then match with the colour of your room.
c. If you are a minimalist and stylish mum then look for baby furniture with simple shapes and predominant white or very soft colours.
d. If you want your baby girls bedroom to look cute, warm and cuddly then your best bet is definitely to look for furniture with round shapes, motives or even cute characters such as the one in the copito cot by micuna.
One last note: if you are thinking of having another child you might consider buying your baby furniture in neutral colours in case your next baby is of different sex than the one you purchase the furniture for.
Once you have chosen the baby furniture you like for your little angel’s bedroom make sure it complies with the Australian standards of safety. Safety is a very serious issue here and should not be taken lightly particularly with baby cots. The good thing is you don’t need to go to the shop and perform fancy tests on the products yourself as the only thing you need is to ensure that the product has passed the tests determined by the Australian standards of safety. In Australia it is illegal to sell baby cots that do not meet these standards however some shops or businesses (particularly start ups) ignore them and sell these products without them knowing. For more information please read or page safety standards.
5. Product warranty
Last but not least is the warranty provided by the manufacturer or retailer of the baby furniture you have selected. Some brands provide up to 5 years warranty (or more). Make sure you read the terms and conditions of these warranties as they could be limited or include clauses that minimise the value of such warranty.
